It was revealed that an aide for Donald Trump copied classified documents from a laptop onto a thumb drive, and that both of these items were turned over to investigators in January of this year. This creates a world of new legal problems for Trump, according to legal experts, and squarely puts the former President embroiled in a laptop scandal just like Hunter Biden. Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains what's happening.

Donald Trump is now embroiled in a laptop scandal of his own. And believe it or not, this one actually might be important. Unlike the Hunter Biden laptop story. This one involves an aid working with Donald Trump, who apparently got a laptop from one of Trump's staffers at the Save America Political Action Committee. Copied a bunch of files from the laptop to a thumb drive that oops, turned out to be classified document stored on that laptop in possession with the staffer. So the laptop and the thumb drive it was revealed this past weekend were in fact turned over to the Department of Justice in January of this year, months and months and months after Trump had been subpoenaed, demanding any and all classified documents that he may have in his possession be turned over to the doj. That subpoena, by the way, came in May of last year.
Then of course, the next month his lawyers lied that everything had been turned over. Then in August we had the FBI raid. More documents have been found since then. So yeah, um, pretty bad for Donald Trump. But as, uh, CNN legal expert, uh, Ellie Honig pointed out, what we're looking at here is worse than just having the documents in a computer that you didn't report. The big question, and this is a question that could open a whole new investigation into Trump Ponik points out, is how'd the documents get on the computer? You see the documents that were on the computer, as far as we know were not digital documents. They were digitized by someone after Trump took them, is what is believed right now. So somebody we don't know who, and I guarantee you Trump's not smart enough to have done it personally himself. Somebody took the document, the classified document, they scanned it into the computer, they saved the file on the laptop.
Then this other clumsy aid comes along and says, oh, I'm copying a bunch of things. I thought it was schedules hoo silly me. And it turns out it was classified documents. So we don't know how the documents were digitized. We don't know why the documents were digitized. And more importantly, as it stands right now, we do not know who else got a copy of the documents. There was no conceivable reason for these documents to be digitized and placed on that laptop unless you are trying to get them to other people that that's the whole goal of it. You had the hard copy, you had it yourself, so you didn't know, I'm gonna keep this for
Myself so I have it later that that's not a good excuse. Why did you need it on the computer? Who'd you send it to? That's the question that needs to be answered. And of course, that is the question that I'm sure the DOJ themselves want answered. But they have the laptop, they have the thumb drive. Uh, we don't know if there's any more copies of any of these documents out there. We don't know exactly how many documents were on the laptop. And it could be that because the DOJ now has all this in their possession and has for about a month or so, they may already know if it had been sent to other individuals. But one thing is very clear about this, this is a pretty massive scandal cuz we're talking about the scanning in and saving of classified documents on an unsecured device that could lead to problems. We don't know if it has, but again, that's something the DOJ.
