Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (née Godwin; 30 August 1797 – 1 February 1851, aged 53) was an English novelist who wrote the Gothic novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus (1818), which is considered an early example of science fiction. She also edited and promoted the works of her husband, the Romantic poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley. Her father was the political philosopher William Godwin and her mother was the philosopher and feminist activist Mary Wollstonecraft.

Shelley's mother passed away less than a month after she was born. She was raised by her father, who provided her with an extensive though informal education and encouraged her to embrace his anarchist political beliefs. When Shelley was four years old, her father married a neighbour, Mary Jane Clairmont, with whom she had a tumultuous relationship.

Shelley began an affair with one of her father's political supporters, Percy Bysshe Shelley, in 1814. Percy Bysshe Shelley was already married. She and Percy travelled through Europe with her stepsister, Claire Clairmont. Shelley was pregnant with Percy's child upon their return to England. She and Percy experienced ostracism, persistent debt, and the death of their prematurely born daughter during the next two years. They married in late 1816, following Percy Shelley's first wife, Harriet's demise.

In 1816, the couple and Mary's stepsister spent a summer near Geneva, Switzerland, with Lord Byron and John William Polidori, when Shelley formed the concept for her masterpiece Frankenstein. The Shelleys moved to Italy in 1818, where their second and third children died before Shelley gave birth to Percy Florence Shelley, her sole surviving child. In 1822, her husband drowned when his sailing boat capsized near Viareggio during a storm. Shelley returned to England a year later and devoted herself to her son's upbringing and a career as a professional author. Her final decade was plagued by disease, most likely caused by the brain tumour that claimed her life at the age of 53.

Mary Shelley's notable works:
Frankenstein (1818), Valperga (1823), The Last Man (1826), Perkin Warbeck (1830), Lodore (1835), Falkner (1837) etc.
