One can argue that it is just reflexes, then don't tailgate and pay full attention to your front.

Many drivers do not realize there are 3 factors that determine the stopping distance of your vehicle.
1) Reaction time
The time it takes from the moment a hazard is recognized to the time the brake pedal is applied, approximately 3/4 of a second.
2) Brake lag
The time your car brakes takes to react through a properly maintained brake system, about 4/10 of a second.
3) Braking distance
The actual distance a vehicle travels after the brake is applied until the vehicle stops. This distance depends on the ability of the quality of the brakes in the car and the tires to grip the road.
